Growing Space Manager and Educator

Background:

The Growing Space Manager and Educator will manage two connected growing spaces (approximately 1 acre total) in East Germantown, located in the shared backyards of Martin Luther King High School and Stenton Family Manor. The two spaces also share a greenhouse. The Growing Space Manager and Educator will work with a small staff  to create a living classroom for program participants and manage production growing. They will be part of program planning and execution in so far as it relates to incorporating the growing space into programming. Although they are only responsible for managing the growing space needs at MLK and Stenton, our team works collaboratively, therefore there will be regular opportunities to connect with staff across all three program sites to receive and provide input and support.

    Minimum Qualifications: 
    • At least two years of relevant experience in large scale gardening or farming  
    • At least two years of relevant experience in youth education
    • Experience working with culturally relevant foods and foodways of the African Diaspora
    • Proficiency using Google Suite (Google Drive, sheets, docs, gmail)
    Desired Qualifications: 
    • Valid PA Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle
    • Experience farming in an educational setting
    • Experience engaging in community development and youth development around gardening and farming
    • Experience growing and working with culturally important plants
    Skills/Attributes: 
    • Love of working with young people and working on/with the land
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to manage time efficiently
    • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs 
    • Flexibility and ability to set up learning experiences outdoors and indoors 
    • Anti-oppression/liberatory framework 
    • Comfort working in-person (following CDC recommendations for masking) in the growing spaces and in a small-ish, shared office in Mt. Airy
    Job Particulars:
    • Time: 30  hours/week
    • Salary– $37,500

    • Availability: Must be available: 
      • Tuesday through Thursday during scheduled programming
      • Monday through Friday 9am-3pm as needed for farm maintenance, meetings and staff communication
      •  Very occasionally (a few times per year) on nights or weekends for special events  
    Requirements:
    • Provide day-to-day management, maintenance and beautification of growing spaces, including the greenhouse
    • Identify growing space needs to support creation of weekly, monthly and annual growing space work plans in collaboration with site partners, program participants, and staff
    • Collaborate with the Program Manager to supervise fellows, volunteers, and interns as needed
    • Ensure order & cleanliness of growing spaces, facilities, gear, & equipment
    • Determine supply needs (soil, mulch, seeds, plants)
    • Ensure all tools, supplies, equipment are working
    • Document planting and harvesting details
    • Make recommendations for staff trainings
    • Create and maintain safe & hospitable site environments
    • Prep growing spaces including tilling, planting, seeding, watering, weeding, harvesting and nutrient management
    • Maintain knowledge related to farm & food safety and industry standards and regulations
    • Prepare growing spaces, tools, equipment, and greenhouse for cold weather
    • Coordinate greenhouse planting and tasks for cold weather season
    • Implement pest, disease and weed management using organic and sustainable practices
    • Create opportunities for program participants and partners to engage with farming and gardening
    • Actively support education in the growing space, including providing direction as needed to participants engaged in educational activities; participate during most planned learning events
    • Participate in weekly Team Meetings and collaborate, coordinate, and knowledge share across teams as needed
    • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Program Manager, manage food distribution plan ensuring that food is distributed to partner sites and/or other community partners
    • Supervise the harvesting, washing, drying, prepping and/or bunching of produce using food safety guidelines
    • Complete professional development, certifications and/or safety trainings as needed
    • Create and post (or tag Food Moxie) in 1-5 social media posts per season, either on IG, FB, and/or Twitter

    CURRENT OPENINGS:

    Interim Exeucutive Director

    Postion Type:

    A six-month contract with possibility for renewal in 30-day increments until a permanent
    Executive Director is hired. Full time, exempt position, including very occasional evening and
    weekend hours, with an annualized salary of $75,000. The Interim Executive Director will be
    eligible to participate in Food Moxie’s competitive benefits package including medical, dental,
    life, and disability insurance; 15% discount at Weavers Way Co-op; generous paid time off.

    The final candidate will be amenable to a hybrid work environment; the Food Moxie office is
    located in West Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, PA.

    Position Summary:
    Food Moxie seeks an organized, thoughtful, and resourceful Interim Executive Director (IED) to
    bring leadership and stability during the transition period between the departure of our former
    Executive Director and a permanent replacement. The IED will lead with compassion and integrity
    in carrying out Food Moxie’s mission, vision, and financial objectives. The IED shares and upholds
    Food Moxie’s values, including the organization’s commitment to equity and inclusion,
    cooperative principles, collective visioning, and local, small-scale urban agriculture.

    The IED will bring leadership to Food Moxie during a unique time with an opportunity to help
    staff and the Board of Directors reimagine the structure and operational procedures of the
    organization. The ideal candidate has experience supervising a team, meeting financial
    objectives, and fostering a culture of operational excellence. The IED will uphold current
    community and donor relationships and will have the opportunity to identify new fundraising
    strategies that will generate long-term financial health for the organization.

    This position reports to the Board of Directors and supervises the Program Manager, Lead
    Educator and Grower, Growing Space Manager, and part-time Operations Manager. The IED will
    also support a part-time grant writer and an artist in residency.
    Food Moxie Background:
    Food Moxie was founded in 2007 as Weavers Way Community Programs, the nonprofit
    affiliate of Weavers Way Cooperative. From seed to supper, Food Moxie educates and inspires

    people to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food. We partner with schools and community-based
    organizations to activate educational growing spaces that offer experiential learning in
    gardening, farming, nutrition, and culinary arts. Ultimately, we envision a vibrant and healthy
    world where all people have skills and resources needed to grow, harvest, cook, and prepare
    food their own way. We believe that food should be celebrated and that individual and
    community health increases when people make growing and cooking part of their lives.

    Key Responsibilities:
    Functional Leadership and Strategic Facilitation
    ● Work with board, staff, and key stakeholders/partners to maintain current programming
    ● Lead staff, board, and stakeholders in fulfilling mission through operations, programs,
    and events
    ● Provide support to FM’s staff, including the facilitation of team meetings, staff check-ins,
    and offering insight into key decision making points
    ● Serve as point person for community and donor partnerships; maintain integrity of all
    current relationships
    ● With the BOD and staff, facilitate collective visioning conversations regarding the future
    of FM’s permanent leadership structure and programs.
    Resource Generation
    ● Oversee resource generation including fund development, grant writing, and events
    ● Facilitate annual budgeting process, with support from the Board of Directors
    ● Ensure implementation of strategies to meet fundraising goals, including Food Moxie’s
    annual appeal, spring appeal and major gifts campaign
    ● Ensure overall success and profitability of annual fundraising event

    ● Develop strategies to increase revenue by leveraging partnership with Weavers Way Co-
    op

    Board of Directors Management and Support
    ● Serve as liaison between board and staff, strategic partners, and funders
    ● Cultivate relationships with individual board members
    ● Develop a structured reporting process; create new board report template and provide
    materials, inclusive of monthly programming and financial updates
    Staff Management and Support
    ● Ensure a healthy work environment that facilitates staff retention
    ● Develop the structure and operational procedures for staff work plans, goals, and
    performance previews
    ● Work with executive board committee and staff to develop/maintain personnel policies
    ● Ensure opportunities for professional development and team building
    ● Assess current staffing roles, responsibilities; offer analysis on current structure and
    make recommendations for improvement

    Communications
    ● Ensure Food Moxie maintains visible and respected presence in the community
    ● Ensure functional and productive collaborations with partner organizations
    ● Serve as media spokesperson, as needed
    ● Create social media calendar and generate weekly content in collaboration with staff
    ● Write monthly article for Weavers Way newspaper, The Shuttle
    ● Generate monthly Food Moxie e-newsletters
    Operational, Financial, and Administrative Management
    ● Maintain overall efficiency and flow in daily operations
    ● Facilitate budget review process in collaboration with board executive committee and
    staff
    ● Oversee operations/administrative and financial functions in management of AP/AR and
    maintenance of all financial records in accordance with approved policies and procedures
    ● Provide timely and accurate financial reports to the board
    ● Manage cash flow and expenses in accordance with budget, including monthly and
    quarterly reports
    ● Create standard operating procedures and document processes/workflows
    ● Oversee relationships with major vendors, including insurance agencies, auditors,
    employee benefits providers (including Weavers Way Co-op), and city/state/federal
    agencies for licensing
    ● Work with BOD as needed to ensure up to date policies and procedures
    ● Develop and maintain personnel policies and procedures, including benefits and
    compensation
    Desired Skills, Attributes, Experience:
    ● Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit, education, agriculture and/or
    social justice/advocacy sectors
    ● Demonstrated experience in fostering community, stewardship and leadership rooted in
    ethical practices, collective visioning, and anti-oppression frameworks
    ● Experience working with diverse groups/individuals, and demonstrated ability to develop
    equitable practices
    ● Ability to manage time efficiently, with great attention to details/deadlines, while
    working on several projects simultaneously.
    ● Familiarity with local resources, peer mission providers and community
    ● Experience facilitating strategic conversations that lead to consensus
    ● Operations acumen – ability to look at various activities and create streamlined systems
    and procedures
    ● Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
    ● Capable of motivating and developing staff and volunteers and maintaining partnerships
    with service and program-related organizations

    ● Ability to work independently, think creatively, solve problems collaboratively, and
    make decisions in accordance with established policies
    ● Desire to make healthy work relationships, foster safe workplace environments and
    contribute to positive, affirming experiences
    ● Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times; has a high moral character.
    ● Demonstrated understanding of Food Moxie’s values and strong desire to advance the
    mission.
    ● Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google products
