Learning how and when to pick\, wash\, sort\, and pack your produce is as important as knowing how to grow it.  \nJoin Food Moxie and Artisan Food Solutions for a two-day event packed with delicious information. Experienced trainer\, Trish Tripp\, of Artisan Food Solutions will lead participants in an exploration of all things postharvest.  A postharvest handling and food safety expert\, Tripp has helped more than 600 growers add value to their farms\, through similar workshops and individualized technical assistance.  \nThe two-day on-farm\, hands-on experience will provide tips and tools that can contribute to wholesale and retail success.  Understanding the processes affecting product quality during packing\, storage and transportation is essential in obtaining a premium price and long-term buyer relationships. Growers will learn practical ways to meet industry quality standards for harvest techniques\, packing\, grading\, pack size\, packaging\, and shelf-life. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Growing Cut-Flowers for Abundant Yields and Maximum Vase Life
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to set up a cut-flower garden for intensive production on a small-scale. Natania Schaumburg from Ruth Bennett Community Farm in Chester\, PA will do a field walk to show you systems that have worked for the Bennett Farm over the past 3 years.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Bennett Farm produces flowers for entrepreneurial training as well as sale through a few different wholesale and direct-market channels. Topics will include variety selection and timing; field support techniques such as staking and netting; harvest tips; post-harvest handling and crop rotation to ensure you have a plentiful abundance of blooms (and greenery!) all season long. \nMake a small bouquet at the end of the workshop to take home with you! Workshop is rain or shine and will only be cancelled in severe weather – check the Eventbrite site for updates. Refreshments provided. On-site parking is available. Park near basketball court and you walk up the court to farm entrance. \n**Workshop will be on-site! We will be socially distanced during the workshop. Masks required. \nThis workshop organized as part of a collaboration with Food Moxie and Ruth Bennett Community Farm. \nRuth Bennett Community Farm\, a project managed by the Chester Housing Authority\, is a two-acre educational farm and environmental education center located at the Ruth Bennett Homes in Chester\, PA. In addition to growing cut-flowers\, we are dedicated to improving access to nutrient-dense foods at affordable prices to residents in Chester. We also provide opportunities for youth and adults to participate in health and wellness activities\, job-readiness and beginning farmer training. We seek to promote a thriving and diverse ecosystem for community members to enjoy.
