FOOD MOXIE seeks a dynamic and resourceful Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization with compassion and integrity in carrying out our mission, vision, and values. Food Moxie believes in the magic of educating and empowering Philadelphians through growing and cooking their own food. By partnering with schools and place-based organizations to offer experiential learning in gardening, farming, nutrition, and culinary literacy, Food Moxie centers children and families
in our work. As the face of Food Moxie, the ED shares and upholds Food Moxie’s values before its diverse team of staff, partners, and funders, including the organization’s commitment to equity and inclusion, cooperative principles, and local,
small-scale, urban agriculture. Through Food Moxie, the ED will join underserved communities in fighting for food justice in Philadelphia. This position reports to Board of Directors and supervises the Program Director, Development Director, and Operations Manager.
Food Moxie was founded in 2007 as Weavers Way Community Programs, the nonprofit affiliate of Weavers Way Cooperative. From seed to supper, Food Moxie educates and inspires people to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food. We accomplish this through garden and culinary programs with underserved students, children, and families in one of the poorest and most food insecure communities in the country. We share knowledge, tools, and inspiration, to connect individuals to the power they have to transform their own health and the health of their communities.
• Work with board, staff, and key stakeholders/partners to develop and implement long-range mission-driven strategic plan and to create annual operational plans
• Oversee organization-wide capacity building projects in accordance with strategic goals and priorities
• Lead implementation of strategic plan tactics to meet identified goals and strategies of the strategic plan and annual operational plans, including overseeing program development and implementation, resource generation, and events
• Lead staff, board, and stakeholders in fulfilling mission and executing on strategic plan
• Ensure fulfillment of mission through operations, programs, and events
• Oversee resource generation including fund development, grant writing, and events
• Ensure the creation and implementation of a long-range revenue plan that includes planned giving program and other strategies to create endowed funds
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with individual major donors and foundation and institutional funders
• Ensure creation of fundraising goals and implementation of development strategies
• Ensure successful annual appeal, spring appeal and major gifts campaign
• Ensure overall success and profitability of annual fundraising event(s)
• Work with staff to explore and implement new revenue sources including fee-for-service programming
Board of Directors Management and Support
• Serve as liaison between board and staff, strategic partners and funders
• Cultivate relationships with individual board members and support their fundraising efforts
• Assist with board development, including onboarding new board members
• Provide materials and resources to board including monthly reports
• With board leadership, ensure active board committees
Talent Management and Support
• Ensure a healthy work environment that attracts, maintains, and motivates top talent
• Ensure processes for recruitment hiring, onboarding and deployment
• Ensure annual performance review process for all staff and conduct reviews for direct reports
• Work with board personnel committee and staff leadership team to develop/maintain personnel policies
• Ensure opportunities for professional development and team building
Strategic Partnerships and Advocacy
• Ensure Food Moxie has a visible and respected presence in the community
• Ensure functional and productive collaborations with partner organizations
• Serve as media spokesperson, including soliciting press coverage
• Secure public speaking engagements to raise awareness of Food Moxie
• Network through participation in coalitions, partnerships, committees Financial, Operational, and Administrative Management
• Develop annual budget and lead budget review process in collaboration with board finance committee and staff leadership team
• Oversee operations/administrative and financial functions in management of AP/AR and maintenance of all financial records in accordance with approved policies and procedures
• Provide timely and accurate financial reports to the board
• Manage cash flow and expenses in accordance with budget, including monthly and quarterly reports
• Oversee annual audit/financial statements and filing of 990 and BCO-10 in consultation with independent auditor
• Oversee relationships with major vendors, including insurance agencies, auditors, employee benefits providers (including Weavers Way Co-op), and city/state/federal agencies for licensing
• Work with BOD and counsel as needed to ensure up to date policies and procedures
• Ensure overall efficiency and flow in daily operations
• Develop and maintain personnel policies and procedures, including benefits and compensation
• Ensure that basic operations are manualized and up-to-date
• Ensure that legal and regulatory requirements are met; consult with legal counsel as needed
• Minimum 5 years of relevant non-profit leadership experience with an emphasis on organizational and resource development.
• Ability to manage time efficiently – with great attention to details/deadlines – while working on several projects simultaneously.
• Strong communicator who has effective relationship management skills and is an inspiring and credible external spokesperson.
• Exceptional writing, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. High level of attention to detail.
• Proven management experience and strong leadership skills.
• Capable of motivating and developing staff and volunteers; and developing partnerships with service and program-related organizations.
• Ability to work independently, think creatively, solve problems collaboratively, and make decisions in accordance with established policies.
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically and understanding of strategic development.
• Strong event planning skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• High energy, positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and comfort working in small, busy office.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times; has a high moral character.
• Demonstrated understanding of FOOD MOXIE’s values and strong desire to advance the mission.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google products
PARTICULARS AND APPLICATION INFORMATION
This is a full time, exempt position with occasional evening and weekend hours. Salary is $65 to $75,000 – commensurate with experience.
